Alexius Meinong Ritter von Handschuchsheim was born in Lvov on 17th July 1853, and died on 27th November 1920 as a senior professor of philosophy at the University of Graz. He was born during the heyday of materialism and died amidst the rise of renewed German idealism. Although these two extremes never influenced his thought, he made a creative contribution to the line of development between them. Based on the experience he gained during this historical evolution, this work constitutes an important and representative account of German philo-sophy in Austria.
